Working Class Poor

Tenth Anniversary Edition of the Classic Bestseller

I’m reading a frightening and thought provoking book by Barbara Ehrenreich called “Nickel and Dimed”. Back in 1998 she went undercover, living and working, as a working low income employee and writes about her experience. How she is invisible as part of the poor working class. Despite the fact that she is working two minimum wage jobs, seven days a week, she still doesn’t have enough money to make ends meet. Scary to think that it could happen to anyone of us under certain circumstances.

I think every high school should require their seniors to read and write a report regarding this book and her experiences. AND, also make them live on a fictitious budget (perhaps based on their grades) for the school year... At the end of the year have them re-read the book and state how they would change things.

Probably not one of my best ideas.... But I have held two full-time minimum wage jobs while going to school. And, not able to get a whole lot of financial support from my guy, now husband, because he was raising two children without much finical support.

This book offers much insight, even today, to what it is actually like to be part of the working poor class.

Have you read this book? Are you able to relate to it because of your past or present situation? Let me know what your take is on the poor working class.
